With the passing of Jimmy Cobb this past month it is important to remember not only his most popular performance on Kind Of Blue, which defined “Cool Jazz”, but also his innovation and contributions in straight ahead be bop. Most drummers and most of the general public who have listened to any jazz are familiar with the deeply mellow and transcendent Kind Of Blue because it is the biggest selling and most popular jazz album of all time. But Cobb was not a one trick pony. He could burn too. This recording and transcription is of a Davis live performance that shows Cobb at his fiery best. Thanks to Towner Galaher for the transcription.
“My name is Towner Galaher and I did the transcriptions for Mike Clark's new Book, "Post Bop Drumming". I also did the transcriptions for his first book, "Funk Drumming - Innovative Grooves and Advanced Concepts". My work was also featured in the first five issues of Drumhead Magazine. I have a transcription of Jimmy Cobb from the Miles Davis album, "Mile Davis at Newport 1958". The transcription is the first four choruses after the head of the opening track, "Ah-Leu-Cha", and highlights him comping behind the soloists. It is Jimmy Cobb at his best. The transcriptions are extremely accurate and clear and illuminate his Left Hand-Right foot dialogue that was so key to that era and style of jazz drumming”
