Adrian Kirchler Bob Meyer Model 7x14

George, A few years ago I was at [Steve] Maxwell's in NYC and tried AK's [Adrian Kirchler's] Damian Reed model with the same snare arrangement. Steve let me take it home for a week and I dug it except for 2 things. It was too dry for my taste and you couldn't separately adjust the inner parallel wires and the outer splayed wires for tension. Adrian designed his take on an old Dresdner throw off, changed the shell from copper to brass and plated it all with 24k gold for more warmth... voila! The Bob Meyer Model 7 x 14 - 2 piece shell (like a 20's BB) snare drum.

I often use wood shelled drums (8" 30s Radio kings, Leedy B'way Parallels, etc) but when I want a powerful drum with great dynamic range and sensitivity, this is it!

As with many drums of the 18th and 19 centuries, this full-barrel bass was more than likely hand crafted by a trunk and furniture maker, or possibly even a coach and carriage builder. The main tack pattern surrounding the sling attachments is very common to that which was used on the lids of storage or travel trunks of the era. A drum maker would normally have his own unique tack pattern to identify his work as opposed to a commonly used utilitarian tack design familiar to trunk builders. A secondary brass tack pattern of a circle within a circle is located surrounding the unreinforced vent hole.

Since 1989 drummer/glass artist, John Orlich has been crafting the actual glass drum. The drums are outstanding musical instruments. In addition they are quite collectible works of art and are financial investments. Each drum is handmade, signed and numbered. Stock sizes will accommodate most drummers’ needs, though drums of custom size can be built to order. Orlich also offers special personalized touches such as glass etching and custom patinas.

Orlich drums will not break from musical use. Though made of glass and perhaps requiring a little more handling finesse, the drums are quite tough due to the superstructure of brass which holds components together. Unless your roadie or drum tech is a complete gorilla you should not fear this material.
