COMPOUND OR ODD, THAT IS THE QUESTION
Ask a musician what kind of time signature is 9/8 and you’ll no doubt get the answer, it’s compound time. After all, the rhythm in 9/8 is generally grouped 3/4+3/4+3/4, making it a typical compound time signature. However, the rhythm could just as well be grouped 2/8+2/8+2/8+3/8, and the 3/8 at the end could be at the start or in-between the 2/8 groups. In such a case I consider it a typical odd time signature since it fits the simple definition of an odd time signature in eighth time—any combination of 2/8+3/8. The following exercises are just a handful of possible cymbal/snare rock grooves in 9/8 time. Try putting a bass drum part to each exercise.
