1920’s Ludwig White Enamel Snare Drum
1923 – 1926 5 x 14 Ludwig All Metal Separate Tension Snare Drum
In 2020, I traded a few Slingerland snare drums for this 1923 – 1926 Ludwig All Metal Separate Tension snare drum. It was in rough shape and needed a lot of work. I refinished the 2 piece brass shell with a coat of white enamel paint and sprayed the hardware with a faux Deluxe finish. The shell has a folded bearing edge that is soldered to the shell. The combination of a white shell with gold hardware looks very classy. This drum came with all the original hardware including hoops, 8 tube lugs and a 338 strainer.
1925 – 1935 5 x 14 Super Ludwig Snare Drum
An old friend of mine had this 1925 – 1935 Super L&L snare in his drum shop, Soul Drums, in Toronto. I ended up trading a Slingerland Radio King set for this snare. I have included a picture of the set I traded here. Like the all metal separate tension snare above, this is a 2 piece brass shell with a folded bearing edge that is soldered to the shell. John Aldridge says this is the secret as to why these drums sound so good!
I also painted this shell with white enamel and will refinish the hardware at a later date. The bottom hoop is engraved with “Super Ludwig” and it has the original super strainer and 10 tube lugs. The snare guards and handle are replicas of the original parts that were purchased separately from Olympic Drums in Portland Oregon.
