On view at The Memphis Drum Shop -- Joe Morello's legendary 'Take 5' ride cymbal displayed in all of its historical significance. The provenance is without question. Drummer Greg Caputo's dad Ralph was Joe Morello's best friend. After a 1978 Joe Morello performance in Springfield, Massachusetts, Joe gifted the cymbal to Ralph Caputo. Presented in a wood framed display case with the inscription "To my friend Ralph Caputo with fondest memories 'Take Five' Joe Morello" - It held a place of honor on the Caputo's living room wall for over thirty years before finding a home in Greg's drum studio. In 2015, Greg asked Memphis Drums' owner Jim Pettit if he was interested in giving Joe Morello's cymbal a much wider audience... Jim said, "absolutely" - It's been on exhibit at the store ever since.
Soon afterwards, Greg and Jim approached the Zildjian company with the concept of duplicating Morello's cymbal. They agreed - The first batch of twelve 20" 'Take 5' reissue ride cymbals were completed and sold exclusively through Memphis Drum. The demand was immediate prompting Zildjian to produce even more. They are truly an exact sonic clone... Down to the weight, bell height, and lathing process. In addition, the cymbal has an old-style Avedis Zildjian stamp on the top, and a laser engraved serial number on the bottom. The Joe Morello 'Take 5' ride cymbal is available exclusively through the Memphis Drum Shop.
Morello's 'Take 5' cymbal joins a stunning vintage collection already showcased at Memphis Drum. This includes a 1956 Gretsch kit exactly like the one D.J. Fontana used when he was playing with Elvis Presley. Chad Smith's original set from the Red Hot Chili Peppers' 'I'm With You' tour. A vintage 'Billy Gladstone' snare drum which belonged to Joe Sinai of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra... In addition to a 30" ride cymbal which Armand Zildjian gave to Jim Pettit as a gift.
When the 'Time Out' album featuring 'Take 5' was recorded at Columbia's 30th Street Studio in New York City in 1959, Ralph Caputo was present at that session. It subsequently became the biggest-selling jazz single of all time and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1996.
