In 2020, Drummer Eric Roy was diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) -- Often called Lou Gehrig's disease... Eric was determined to fight, rather than surrender to the disease. Always positive in his outlook on life gave Eric the power to inspire and help others. That was returned in kind on October 2, 2021 at an outside benefit show to help defray Eric's medical costs. Numerous friends, family members, and supporters turned out to hear 'Blue Devil Bluez' the group Eric formed with his bassist dad Bob Roy, and guitarist Mark Rogers in 2009.
"I am beyond grateful for the love and support I've received from so many of you at the Blue Devil Bluez gig.
I would like to thank my father, Jenn, and everyone who made, and donated raffle prizes. I appreciate everything you've done for me. Due to never ending medical issues I was unable to attend - but thanks to Gary and his camera I was able to watch the whole gig from start to finish. Thanks to all my friends for coming out, buying raffles and in general, just being there for me.
Thank you all from the bottom of my heart."

Up to that point in time, Eric was playing in a metal band with absolutely no interest in the blues. That all changed when Eric heard Michael Burks in concert, and was subsequently blown away. After the gig he got to hang with Michael's drummer Chuck 'Popcorn' Louden' who showed Eric some cool licks to practice. 'Blue Devil Blues' guitarist, Mark Rogers said - Eric proceeded to play them exactly like 'Popcorn'. Michael Burks gave him a big nod of approval... After that night, Eric Roy was hooked on the blues and never looked back.
Soon afterwards, Eric formed a new group with his dad, bassist Bob Roy, and guitarist Mark Rogers...They called themselves 'Blue Devil Bluez'. Their very first gig was a pancreatic cancer fundraiser at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. BDB continued to work steadily from 2009 until the pandemic shut everything down.
Presently, 'Blue Devil Bluez' are once again playing out on a regular basis with Tim Smith on drums. When Eric could no longer play, he insisted that the band continue on without him. He said, "You guys keep on going... My dad needs this". Eric was referring to his mom Diane who had passed away of ALS a year earlier... He didn't want his dad giving up on his lifelong passion for music and performing.
Previous to the October 2nd fundraiser, a benefit walk titled #destROYals was scheduled to raise additional funds for Eric's medical care. It was held on April 18, 2021 at Stanley Park in Westfield, Massachusetts. Another walk will take place at the same location on October 24, 2021.
“Eric, It was a wonderful event in your honor. I’m sorry you couldn’t be there, but I’m glad you got to see it all. You have a wonderful sense of humor and you’re one of those people who like to make sure others are comfortable and okay in spite of what you’re going through. I find that beautiful and amazing."

'Blue Devil Bluez' keyboardist Joe Elliott stated that working with Eric is amazing... "He's a great kid who can play anything... His feel, dynamics, and tasty grooves are second to none. Eric also has an incredible voice - singing lead and playing double bass drum fills simultaneously in a very tasteful manner. He's always open-minded, facing things head on". Of late, tech savvy Eric is using the computer to compose his own original music.
The beginning of Eric's career began in pre-school when it was discovered that he had an innate sense of timing... Eric's music teacher immediately had him playing the drums. Later in fifth grade he began playing the saxophone, and also picked up the guitar. Soon afterwards, Eric was playing on his dad's drums that were set up in the basement of their home. Bob, also an accomplished drummer in addition to playing bass began showing Eric how to play when instinct soon took over... He was a natural. After that, his talents took over... Eric was soon on his way to rocking out with his dad in 'Blue Devil Bluez'.
"What can I say about Eric Roy and what he does to people like us and music like 'Blue Devil Bluez' ? Eric inspires us to be the best we can be…To surround one another with love, light, and laughter. Eric… You are not just your story… You are OUR story. Your experience could be any of our experiences. If I may speak for all of us, we are blessed to be a part of your story as it unfolds… Thank you, Eric, for being such an inspiration."

Recently, Eric was the subject of a podcast where he discusses ALS. He explains how the disease is common in his family, and how it attacks the body. Eric also mentions recent medical trials which have shown some promising results... But more research and funding is required. During these challenging times, Eric and his family need our support and have started a GoFundMe page. Funds collected will provide additional medical care, and medications not covered by insurance. Any donation would be greatly appreciated.
