“I met Tony Williams in the late 1960's during a lesson with Charlie Perry on Long Island, New York. Charlie was a great jazz drummer who had played with Benny Goodman for many years after Gene Krupa. Charlie lived just a few miles from my home. During the lesson, Tony walked in... He was playing in New York City and came out to study with Charlie. Tony was a constant learner and such a great person. His love for drumming was obvious. He listened to and studied everyone. Tony was also a great composer. He went beyond just drumming and understood the depth of music at a very high level.
Later on in the 1980s, I was the Master of Ceremonies for one of his clinics on Long Island. Tony answered every question with compassion and clear direction. He was very schooled and really into helping drummers understand his concepts of musical expression.
Several months before he passed in October of 1996, we played The Florida Drum Festival to 2,000 drummers. Tony was at the top of his game... Expressive, powerful, creative and you always expected the unexpected.
We had the chance to talk for a while before his performance. He had an album coming out, 'Young At Heart' which he was excited about. He talked about wanting to be known as a composer and an individual artist. I told him, you are already there! Tony really appreciated that. He was, and still is such a powerful force in drumming and music.
Listening to him on recordings is a must with all of my students. Studying Tony is a path to expressive success. I recently spent some time with Cindy Blackman Santana. Listen to Cindy if you want to better understand Tony Williams. Cindy has her own sound and style - yet, you can hear Tony's influence. Just as you can with Steve Gadd, Vinnie Colaiuta, Bill Stewart, Carl Allen and so many other players.
Tony has given us a path to find yourself in your drumming, and reach for what is not there... But discover and uncover musical ideas. Tony Williams lives and is soaring above us to let us seek our individual path to our own voice.
Listen to him, feel his heart and continue to stay 'Young at Heart' -- Tony lives!
