Another new chapter in our ongoing series of conversations, quotes, commentary, and updates with jazz drumming legend Mike Clark… Mike’s keen observations provide numerous insights into ‘All Things Music’. Mike just tells it like it is.
“I was just thinking about all the great jazz artists that didn't get a break -- and are still bringin' it and growing. They are heroes in my book. I was lucky to get a bit of love that has lasted me a lifetime”.
“To some degree, I am still struggling - but I’m good with it!
I was in the right place at the right time which somewhat prepared me. But, I am of aware of all the great artists who never had that same opportunity. Those are the people I find interesting… As long as we can survive and create, I feel what we do creates value for others. We are still needed… Maybe now more than ever in spite of how weird things are right now”.
“I know people who felt too inadequate to get out on the scene to meet the artists and play with them… It’s a mental thing. They knew they were good, but maybe didn't think they fit in, or play this way or that way. Fear and lack of confidence is not always about how one plays… But deep down is usually the reason. I felt like that even when doing well, so I get it. I challenged myself and did it anyway - Even when it was seriously uncomfortable. To get the music you have to find out about yourself, your humanity, and what's expected of you. Now all of us are off the scene. I’m glad that I stepped up and played with most of the musicians I wanted. I dig them, and learned how to play from them all.
This was forced upon me by simply needing the money! The lessons were… I might have stayed at home and lost all of that knowledge I gained. I was fortunate to experience the musicians, and all the great music. I learned from each one of those people. THANKS ALL... FOR REAL !
