On October 23 & 24, 2019 - Legendary jazz drummer Max Roach will be honored in a series of symposiums and events at the University of Massachusetts - Amherst. Roach who passed away in 2007, was a faculty member at UMass from 1972 to 2004. Professor Roach joined the W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies, and was one of the founders of the Jazz in July Program along with Billy Taylor and Frederick Tillis.
October 23, 2019 - A panel titled “Conversations: Drummers As Trendsetters” will be moderated by Dr. Stephanie Shonekan, chair of the W.E.B Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies at UMass.
October 24, 2019 - A panel titled “Conversation: The Life and Legacy of Max Roach,” will include poet Sonia Sanchez; Roach biographer Herb Boyd, visual artist Nelson Stevens and Roach’s daughter, Maxine... John Bracey, Jr. a professor of Afro-American Studies at UMass will moderate the conversation.
The evening of October 24, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. will feature three-time GRAMMY Award-winning drummer Terri Lyne Carrington in Bowker Auditorium. With her amazing style and technique, Carrington is at the forefront of Jazz music today. Terri will perform “Money Jungle: Provocative in Blue”. Her concert is the culmination of a series of events honoring the truly innovative spirit of UMass Amherst legacy Max Roach. Over a 40-year career, Terri Lyne Carrington has played with jazz luminaries Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Lester Bowie, Cassandra Wilson, Dianne Reeves, John Scofield, Pharoah Sanders, Esperanza Spalding and countless others.
Prior to the concert on Thursday, there will be a series of free events honoring Max Roach... Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 6:30 p.m. there will be a conversation titled “Drummers as Trendsetters,” where drummers discuss the legacy of Max Roach ... Panelists include Terri Lyne Carrington, Makaya McCraven, and Royal Hartigan
On Thursday, Oct. 24 at 4 p.m. there will be a conversation titled “The Life and Legacy of Max Roach” with a special opening performance by Terry Jenoure. Panelists include poet Sonia Sanchez, Roach’s daughter Maxine Roach, biographer Herb Boyd, visual artist Nelson Stevens and moderated by John Bracey.
