The story of the man is also the story of the drum. In many ways, they are one and the same; sharing the very vortex of Hell on Earth in the meat-grinder of what would become the Army of the Potomac. At only five foot, three inches tall, a 35 year old cigar maker from Jackson County, Maine, "took the dollar," the oath of allegiance, to become a Private in the Union Army as a Drummer. James D. Deas mustered into Company C, 5th Maine Infantry Volunteers in Portland, Maine, for 3 years of duty that would change his life forever.
When the 5th Maine was mustered into service on June, 24, 1861, it had a full complement of 1046 men and received an additional 500 recruits during the nex...

So
what’s this fascination about collecting vintage drums? Searching
for a superior instrument? Sorry, but there are newly constructed
instruments today that rival even the most superior drums of
yesteryear, if not better. It is not like the old days where your
drum choice was limited to the offerings of mass-production
assembly-line corporations. Customs shops today can answer your every
demand for the most minute construction detail. From shell
construction, lug con...

WFL Bass Drum Modification Mysteryby Gabriel Harris
Editor's note - (Gabriel, who works for Meinl Cymbals here in Nashville, called me up about a Gretsch drum set I was selling and mentioned he had a wierd WFL bass drum with an unusual modification. He brought it to the NSMD office and told me about how he researched it and solved the mystery.)
I believe that this modification was done at Drum City by Roy Harte in Hollywood, CA in the fifties or sixties. Stan at Pro Drum Shop recognized the w...

Hi all,
Straight from the fertile waters of Ebay...another weird one enters the collection. I have only seen four 4 x 14 Tone Flange Models. Three are 4 x 14 Slingerland (2 Sea Green Pearl, 1 Gold Sparkle) Artist Models and then there is this interesting no-name 4 x 14 (Black Lacquer) snare drum with a Tone Flange that makes it four. I know of what I speak because I own all four of the aforementioned snare drums. I know that I am not the only vintage snare drum collector out there so if the...

Hello Drum Friends,
A few months ago I saw a suitcase drum set in one of the drummer magazines and decided to make one for myself. It was really fun to build out of stuff I mostly already had. I went down to the local antique shop to look for a good solid wooden suitcase to use for my kick drum. I took along a mallet to wop the suitcases to get the right one. The lady asked me, "what on earth are you doing". I told her what I was about to do with the vintage suitcase and she didn...

As we musicians know our ears are the most important piece of "gear" we have and to protect them goes without saying. I've had numerous pairs of the custom molded earplugs and had mixed results with them; some of them would "lose their seal" when I would move my jaw and as a result I quit spending $200 a pop on those and opted for the standard "ER-15" style earplugs, the kinds that look like small rubber bullets.
In my quest for simplifying the various accessories in my life that I must carry around (phone, handsfree headset, wallet, keys, etc...)I fantasized about having a set of earplugs that would serve a multifunctional purpose of being the wireless headset; earbuds that I could listen through if you will. Well lo and behold, I ran into the nice people at Entymotic Research while at the 2013 NAMM show and they have several makes of headset that "fit this Bill" just perfectly.

The Chicago Drum & Restoration Ltd. drum company specializes in all things Slingerland old and new. This small but productive company has begun to manufacture two new series of drums that are Slingerland reproductions in spirit; the American Classic and the American Heritage. Both are produced using the Nile factory era type shell with steam bent solid maple 3 ply reinforcement rings. The interiors are finished with tung oil. The bearing edges are 30 degrees with a round-over. The snares are 5 ply shells while the basses and toms are 3 ply. The difference between the two series are in the shell wood types, the lugs and the hoops. The American Heritage shell is mahogany and poplar with tube lugs and a single flange hoop with clips. The American Classic shell is maple and mahogany with beaver tail lugs and stick saver hoops. Both models are available in classic wrap colors. A three point reproduction strainer is standard, and the oval black and silver badge is very Niles-ish. Pure sound snare wires are standard.
